The Arts at U.B.Kinsey/Palmview Elementary School

Students receive an arts-centered approach to language arts instruction. Every grade level in our school participates in a school-wide Reader’s Theater Festival in order to improve oral reading fluency and comprehension. Each classroom teacher chooses a Reader’s Theater script, or develops a script from a book that is being read in the classroom. The students make props, participate in the directorship of the production, and, of course, read a part of the script. This opens many avenues for the teacher to get children involved in the analysis of the story, and the pure joy of reading. Classes present their script to an audience of parents, students and judges. In alignment with our arts magnet program, each student receives instruction enriched by playing classical music in the background according to the Mozart Effect research. Classroom teachers use songs and music to teach math facts, science facts, test taking strategies, and other concepts. Through a partnership with the Norton Gallery of Art, students are able to learn science, math and reading though analysis of famous works of art in the gallery.

These areas are: Computer Graphics, Dance (ballet, modern, jazz and ethnic dance), Music (general music and strings – violin, viola, cello and bass), Theatre, Visual Art, T.V. Production/Communications, and Spanish (4 th and 5 th grade). Students who are in 3 rd through 5 th grade receive the above arts areas and may also choose one or two specialty arts classes called “Studio Class” which meets at the end of our extended school day. Those “Studio Classes” are: Computer Graphics, beginning and advanced; Dance, beginning and advanced; Concert band, beginning and advanced; Chorus; Handbells/Keyboard; String Orchestra (beginning and advanced); Communications, T.V. Production, Journalism, Writing; Theatre (beginning and advanced), and Visual Arts (portfolio for 5 th graders, pottery, drawing and painting and mixed media). Fine Arts teachers are encouraged to teach the arts through academic areas where it is at all possible. For example, patterns in Visual Arts, Music and Dance can be compared to patterns in mathematics. Reading comprehension and fluency are integrated in Communications and Theater.

Our Pride
Mrs. Helen Byrd, principal states, “The joy and pride is extremely tangible. It impacts all aspects of the students’ lives as evidenced by the improvement in behavior, grades, and attitudes."

Mrs. Sharon Campbell, Magnet Coordinator explains, “Visitors come for tours of the U.B. Kinsey campus on a regular basis. As they walk along the campus, they are in awe by what they see; children singing; a theatre class sitting in a circle around a student practicing a monologue; students in dance slippers pirouetting, stretching and leaping while following the choreography for the next performance; artists in smocks working on colorful paintings; students playing the violin in one classroom and others practicing percussion instruments in another; students working on a computer presentation for class in the computer lab; while others are photographing or videotaping an art exhibit or performance on and o! campus. All of these activities can be a part of the arts class or the academic class. UBK is a lively place, full of music, laughter, energy and academic excellence! Visitors are usually excited and amazed at the intensity of instruction, both art and academic, that occurs at UBK. Most of the time they indicate that they wish that they had gone to this school as a youngster and want to know when their child can start!
