Advocacy Ideas!

Advocacy IdeasInviting decision-makers to arts events fosters good community relations because it:

  1. Includes elected officials as part of the community that has a vested interest in your schools.
  2. Encourages officials to help celebrate students' accomplishments.

When legislators or local decision makers attend events, be certain to:

  1. Introduce the elected official to your principal.
  2. Assign a student(s) or parent to be a greeter/host. (NOTE: Never, ever leave the guest official on his/her own. Guide them to the parking lot at the end of the event. Schools often are confusing labyrinths to visitors!)
  3. Invite them to do something other than be a part of the audience. Feature them in the program. Give them a task at the beginning and, if possible, again at the end.
  4. Be the host/presenter at an art opening or performance, Distribute awards or receive an award of recognition.
  5. Create the possibility of an ongoing relationship between the official and your school.
  6. Become the “FACE of ACE (Arts for a Complete Education) for the official.”
