Featured Career: Museum Educator

About Me

My name is Rebecca Hickey. I was one of those kids who always knew what she wanted to be when she grew up. I wanted to be a psychologist. I wanted to work with people and understand them, why they acted the way they did, what was happening inside the brain as someone’s face turned red with anger or embarrassment. My need for that understanding stayed with me through the years. As time went by, though, I realized that I also had a deep passion for the arts and so began my journey to reconcile psychology and art into a single career. As it turns out, this was not as difficult a task as I had thought it would be.

Museum Educator

A Museum Educator focuses on teaching art that relates specifically to the exhibitions on display. It could be part of a museum’s permanent collection or traveling exhibitions on display at the time. We aren’t limited to teaching studio art, although we do love doing that! We also get to teach about art. A Museum Educator has the honor of looking at a work of art, maybe five years old, maybe five hundred years old, and becoming so intimately involved with it that they can speak of it to another as if discussing their best friend. I am passionate about art. I am passionate about teaching young children how to make pinch pots out of clay, then explaining to them that thousands of years ago children made the very same pots, the very same way!
