Off the Wall & Onto the Stage: Dancing the Art of Jonathan Green

In celebration of Black History Month and in conjunction with the First Lady's Arts Initiative: Arts for Life!, the works of Jonathan Green, one of the most culturally significant African-American artists of our time, were on display at the Florida Governor's Mansion February 1 - 28, 2005. Jonathan Green, whose work has been exhibited in major national and international venues, is considered one of the most important Southern American artists alive today and one of the most important painters of the southern experience. Jonathan is an ideal choice to honor during Black History Month, given his effort to preserve the Gullah heritage and traditions in which he was raised. His vibrant, bold paintings capture the essence of day-to-day life in the Gullah community.

In conjunction with this special exhibition of Jonathan Green's images, we are also proud to support one of Jonathan's recent collaborations: Off the Wall & Onto the Stage: Dancing the Art of Jonathan Green. Twenty-two of Jonathan's images come to life in a project that brings together music, dance, and the visual arts in a classical ballet performed by the Columbia City Ballet of South Carolina.
