The Arts at Gocio Elementary School
Visual Art
Music
Dance
Drama
(all teachers are certified in their art form)
Our Arts Teaching Team Includes:
Visual Art: Margie Silver
Music: Mary Jane Brantley
Dance: Deb Lombard
Drama: Dawn Burns
Our Schedule:
Each day students attend a “special area” class for 55
minutes. At Gocio, these
classes are visual art, music, dance, drama, PE, science and
technology. Students
attend the same class for 5 consecutive days then rotate. It’s
a seven-week rotation.
Students spend 103/180 school days in arts classes or 57%
of the time.
Our Pride:
“That Gocio Elementary School is the only elementary school in
Sarasota that offers
all the art forms. ALL students experience these art forms
via the “special
area”
class rotation wheel. This only happens because our principal
is truly an arts
leader.” (Silver, Brantley, Lombard and Burns)

“In one day, visitors would observe students creating innovative
art projects,
collaborating with area artists, and seeing student art
work displayed throughout
the school. They would see a “hands on” music class that
includes vocal music,
instruments and improvisation skills. In dance they would
observe students
exploring basic dance skills, creating dances, and discovering the
basic concepts of
dance. As the visitors toured drama they would witness students
learning stage
directions, practicing a play, storytelling, audition and improvisation
skills.
Every Friday we have clubs from 2:15 – 3:10 p.m. Students can
choose to audition
for Song and Dance Kids (a performance troupe), Art Club,
Drama Club, and
Theatre Tech Club where students build sets, and costumes for our
productions.”
(Silver, Brantley, Lombard, and Burns)
Our Special Arts Programs:
“As arts teachers we truly collaborate! We are a school that loves
to work together.
In May we have a Celebration of the Arts which includes
a parent-child art activity
in the art room, a schoolwide Art Show and a musical theatre production
complete
with sets, costumes, choreography and lights. The sets and costumes
are designed
and built by students, the program is created by students in the
Technology Club
and the end result is that 75 % of the students enrolled participate!
We make curriculum connections through collaboration with teachers in the classroom.
We co-mingle the arts curriculum with the K-5 curriculum. Examples include the music teacher teaching songs that the dance teacher then choreographs followed by the drama teacher working on the drama and intent of the piece. Also, the terminology used in our arts classes is supported in the language arts instruction occurring in our classrooms.” (Silver, Brantley, Lombard and Burns)

“As a musical theater fanatic, I’m moved by the lyrics and
melodies written by artists
both past and present. Stephen Sondeim, in his
show Sunday in the Park With George composed the song, “Putting it Together”. His brilliant
lyric states, Art
isn’t easy! A
vision’s just a vision if it’s only in your head. If no
one gets to hear it, it’s as good as
dead. It has to come to life! I can proudly
say that my vision has come to life. I
envisioned an elementary school that would provide ALL the arts
for ALL the kids! And
thanks to an amazingly talented group of arts teachers,
that vision is a reality at Gocio
Elementary School.”
