Bay Arts Alliance

850-769-1217, ext. 102
www.bayarts.org

Bay Arts Alliance presents four live theater performances to Bay District students in the first, third, fifth, and eighth grades at no charge to schools or students. District transportation bus children to the performances, which take place during the school day. In preparation for the events, Bay Arts provides teachers with study guides that focus on topics ranging from the discipline of the arts performed, to literary tools used, to character lessons that emerge. A live transmission is also broadcast to the Bay Regional Juvenile Detention Center (BRJDC) in tandem with the performance, similar to a “pay-per-view” event. Key partners in the broadcast initiative include Comcast, which provided the hardware, physically laid the conduit between the two facilities, and open the connection between the sites (which are 12 blocks apart) when the event occurs. Other partners, the Public Eye video production company and Bill Hudson Video Productions, provide cameras, switchers, and trained operators to run the equipment during the performance.

As often as can be negotiated, Bay Arts later brings the artists into BRJDC to conduct workshops with students. It also provides tickets to the children in the detention center, to use as gifts to people that mean something to them. This reflects the theory of restorative justice, where youth are encouraged to think of others, and exercise empathy and generosity. Youth have responded to this project enthusiastically, expressing appreciation to parents, grandparents, and even guards employed at BRJDC through the gift of performance tickets.

Council on Culture and Arts

Tallahassee, FL 32301
cultural@cocanet.org
850-224-2500

Council on Culture and Arts (COCA) administers more than $1 million each year in re-granting programs for the City of Tallahassee and Leon County. More than thirty grants are awarded each year to local non-profit arts and cultural groups, with criteria based on artistic excellence and service to citizens and visitors. A diverse panel of community volunteers reviews applications and makes funding recommendations in a rigorous and highly accountable process. Grant guidelines, which were developed by a community task force, are reviewed and revised every year.

Many local citizens have physical or economic challenges that keep them from attending cultural events, and this re-granting program matches social service groups with local event producers. COCA coordinates the program, in which arts groups provide free tickets, and social service agencies identify individuals in need and arrange their transportation.

COCA provides technical assistance with grant writing, fundraising, board development, arts business management, marketing, and a variety of other topics to hundreds of individual artists and arts organizations every year. COCA staff speaks at community programs, teach guest classes at local colleges, and serve as panelists and jurors for grant review panels and competitions. COCA also sponsors workshops and
cultural forums on topics of interest.

Five 8-week classes of innovative art programming—held in three Senior Centers, an Assisted Living and Rehabilitation Center, and a Center for Retarded Citizens—will be provided to elderly people and adults with disabilities. Teaching artists will travel from Franklin and Gulf County facilities to instruct in a rural, underserved area. Guided by artists, participants will view and discuss other works of art, create their own work, and display the finished products at a community exhibit. Classes will provide beginning instruction in a variety of mixed media to best match clients’ skills with interests. Media will include acrylic painting, clay sculpting, and found art assembly. Participants will learn how to use visual arts to tap into self- expression and have engaged social interaction with instructors, peers and volunteers. A hands-on learning approach will be used, going beyond the passive arts and crafts activities typically offered at the facilities where classes will be held.

A six-week creative dramatics class, meeting once weekly with the Gulf County Association of Retarded Citizens, will showcase a variety of styles, including storytelling, improvisation, movement, voice work, the use of texts and scripts, masks and puppets, and theater games. Through creative, dramatic structures, this will encourage participants to examine and explore both the world around them, and their own personal issues and interests. This new initiative is made possible through monies provided by an NEA Challenge Grant, the Florida Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Gulf Alliance for Local Arts.

836 Prudential Dr., Ste. 1205
Jacksonville, FL 32207
info@artwithaheart.info
904-202-2689
www.artwithaheart.info

The non-profit Art With A Heart For Children provides hospitalized children with an opportunity for expression and creativity through fine art instruction, enabling patients to discover their artistic voice while on a personal healing journey.

Co-founded by cousins Lori Guadagno and Lisa Landwirth Ussery in 2001, the program aims to improve the quality of life for hospitalized children through the healing power of art. It has served more than 9,500 children at Wolfson Children’s Hospital and the Nemours Children’s Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.

Specific programs include the following:

  • Healing through Art, based on the belief that art is both highly transformative and an excellent vehicle for patients to gain self-confidence and self-esteem. Through an art dialogue, life stories can be visually narrated while scars are healed, diseases treated, and bodies mended.
  • The Artists, who travel to the patient floors five days a week armed with paints, brushes, pastels, and an unlimited supply of paper. There, the artists conduct sessions that meet the distinct needs of initial patients.
  • Art Studios, where temporary art studios are set up bedside, both in children’s rooms at the Dialysis Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care, the Behavioral Health Unit, and the Emergency Room, and in various playrooms throughout the hospital.
  • Masterpieces, where artists are encouraged to donate a special “masterpiece” which is displayed in the facilities. The art pieces are rotated on a regular basis, and a traveling exhibit showcases a selection of works in different venues throughout Jacksonville.
  • Visiting Artist Series, where volunteer local artists share their talents in special sessions.

HOSPITALART artists create original designs either on a single 18-x-24-inch canvas, or on multiple canvases, making large murals. All of the art is donated to not-for-profit facilities such as hospitals, children’s aid facilities, youth and crisis centers, hospices, minority health clinics, nursing homes, and facilities for victims of domestic abuse. These enhance the facilities’ environments in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties in south Florida.

In addition, the Senior ArtReach programs, which provides visual art and drama programs to senior citizens, are held at county Senior Centers, and area rehabilitation and assisted living centers.

The 300-member Florida Youth Orchestra (FYO), based in Brevard County, brings the gift of orchestral music to the young and is recognized as Florida’s premier youth orchestra.

Recently, the FYO developed a concert series dedicated to the generation that taught them music. Generations bridges the gap between young players and older listeners, and furthers FYO’s commitment to reaching out to all parts of the South Florida community. This concert places particular focus on the Senior Citizens of the community, many of whom lack a chance to experience classical music performed live.

The FYO conducts free concerts at Senior Centers, assisted living facilities, nursing homes and condominiums throughout the South Florida area. They also take performances “on the road” to trailer park recreation centers, to provide music to those who might not otherwise have a chance to experience it.

At each concert, Seniors are encouraged to bring family members to share an afternoon of music with their loved ones. Each concert provides the chance for the young musicians to visit and interact with the older listeners. During the refreshments provided after the performance, the orchestra streams out into the audience for interaction, further connecting different generations.

Professionals throughout the area teach regularly at the conservatory, and guest artists from the Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s productions also conduct workshops. A youth touring company gives students the opportunity to perform throughout the area, while “coffee shop productions” allow students the opportunity to create their own mini-performances in its studios. Full-length book musicals are also performed by students and directed by professionals. A community outreach program enabled COPA to go to Jupiter Elementary School, a Title I school, for six weeks for special Page to Stage workshops that illustrate how a story can be read in a book or acted out in a play. Six hundred students then attended the Kids Korner series of children’s performances at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre.

The YBBCF is an educational outreach program established by the Brass Band of Central Florida, which is following a trend being set by colleges and universities to bring the British-style brass band medium back to North American communities after over 100 years. The only organization of its kind offered exclusively to high school students in the state of Florida, it aims to better prepare members for a future career in music.

Instrumentation of the YBBCF follows British tradition, and includes B-flat and E-flat cornets, E-flat tenor horns, B-flat baritones, trombones, bass trombone, tubas, and percussion. Repertoire includes orchestral and band transcriptions, as well as traditional brass band music, and students are encouraged to perform chamber music in small quartets and quintets. The band, which will perform two or three concerts per season, plans to compete in the youth category of the North American Brass Band Championships. Some concerts will include special musical guests who will provide master classes for the students.

The rehearsal and performance season will last throughout the school year, beginning in September and ending in May. Membership is chosen by recommendation of the students’ music director and an audition each September.

The Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center (TBPAC) delivers a wide variety of free arts education outreach programs throughout its seven-county region, serving thousands of at-risk and underserved K-12 students, seniors, patients and service agency clients each year.

One such initiative, Time Tapestries, is a multi-disciplinary program that teaches seniors creative storytelling, dramatic narrative, and performance skills. Time Tapestries originated as the Patel Conservatory’s first program focusing on Senior Citizens, engaging the community’s lifelong learners in sharing personal stories, writing dramatic narratives, embracing visual literacy, and performing their work. The pieces range from issue-based personal and family tales, to stories of national and world significance. By performing their stories for others living in their communities, Seniors celebrate the value and accomplishments of their lives, and also create a friendly pathway to the Center for those who seek continued learning experiences. Next, this program will develop a core company of Senior performers and engage them in community outreach beyond their living environments.

In 2007, an intergenerational facet of the program was introduced. Today, the Time Tapestries seniors collaborate with youth from TBPAC’s Partnership Schools, sharing experiences about coping with life’s challenges. First, a project director works with students in writing and performance workshops, then Seniors and students meet together. Their projects culminate in public performances at the Patel Conservatory and at the University Village retirement living facility. This initiative brings youth and their elders together, fostering a respect for lifelong learning in the process.
