Florida Program ResourcesSurvey ResultsWe surveyed organizations throughout Florida, and discovered they offered a variety of innovative, hands-on arts programming. Read on for details about arts opportunities near you. Arts Association of Lake & Sumter
Counties (e.g. PALS) PALS, which established a Renaissance Faire in Lake County, also brings school children in to participate at Pops at the Point. This event featured the Orlando Symphony playing under a tent at Hickory Point, and music students in Lake and Sumter Counties enjoyed the music thanks to free tickets. Currently, PALS is working to fund a 2,000-seat performing arts center on the campus of Lake Sumter Community College. It has raised $5.8 million to date, and all contributions will be matched dollar for dollar by the State of Florida. Arts Council of Hillsborough County Arts Council of Hillsborough County supports an Arts
for Elders program that reaches more than 2,000 seniors, special
needs individuals, staff, volunteers and family members in 22 Hillsborough
County sites. A partnership with the Life Enrichment Center sponsors
the Forever Moving Dancers—adults
ranging in age from 55 to 80—in contemporary dance workshops.
To keep youth off the streets and focused on creative activities, they
also sponsor Community Stepping Stones,
an after-school and weekend art program in Tampa’s poorest neighborhood,
Sulphur Springs. Arts Council of Manatee Co. The Arts Council of Manatee County offers an array of arts-related programming for students and residents. It provides rebuilt computers as learning incentives, helps fund a writing curriculum, gives grants to local arts organizations for programs in art and theater for children, and conducts music master classes. Other Arts Council programs include student scholarships, a summer arts program for at-risk children, and opportunities for youth recently released from jail. Teachers enjoy grants, workshops, arts awards, and valuable resources, including an Arts Ideas Book. The Council also purchases all music for the all-county school music program. In partnership with Bright House Networks, it provided instruments to a low-income elementary school to start a band program, and developed a program for Hispanic and Latino families in partnership with Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. In the Riders for Readers program, motorcyclists ride to schools, where they read to up to 600 children, and distribute books and tee shirts. Bay Arts Alliance Bay Arts Alliance presents four live theater performances to Bay District students in the first, third, fifth, and eighth grades at no charge to schools or students. District transportation bus children to the performances, which take place during the school day. In preparation for the events, Bay Arts provides teachers with study guides that focus on topics ranging from the discipline of the arts performed, to literary tools used, to character lessons that emerge. A live transmission is also broadcast to the Bay Regional Juvenile Detention Center (BRJDC) in tandem with the performance, similar to a “pay-per-view” event. Key partners in the broadcast initiative include Comcast, which provided the hardware, physically laid the conduit between the two facilities, and open the connection between the sites (which are 12 blocks apart) when the event occurs. Other partners, the Public Eye video production company and Bill Hudson Video Productions, provide cameras, switchers, and trained operators to run the equipment during the performance. As often as can be negotiated, Bay Arts later brings the artists into BRJDC to conduct workshops with students. It also provides tickets to the children in the detention center, to use as gifts to people that mean something to them. This reflects the theory of restorative justice, where youth are encouraged to think of others, and exercise empathy and generosity. Youth have responded to this project enthusiastically, expressing appreciation to parents, grandparents, and even guards employed at BRJDC through the gift of performance tickets. Brevard Cultural Alliance For more than ten years, the Brevard Cultural Alliance has provided Artists in Residency programs in sites that serve at-risk youth and the Department of Juvenile Justice. It funds programs for the arts in conjunction with Senior Services Meals on Wheels; community lunch through the Brevard Community Resource Council; and a summer program for children with special needs through VSA arts Florida-Brevard Chapter. Through its efforts, residents enjoy the Art in Public Places program in local hospitals and the Space Coast Cancer Center. Council on Culture and Arts Council on Culture and Arts (COCA) administers more than $1 million each year in re-granting programs for the City of Tallahassee and Leon County. More than thirty grants are awarded each year to local non-profit arts and cultural groups, with criteria based on artistic excellence and service to citizens and visitors. A diverse panel of community volunteers reviews applications and makes funding recommendations in a rigorous and highly accountable process. Grant guidelines, which were developed by a community task force, are reviewed and revised every year. Many local citizens have physical or economic challenges that keep them from attending cultural events, and this re-granting program matches social service groups with local event producers. COCA coordinates the program, in which arts groups provide free tickets, and social service agencies identify individuals in need and arrange their transportation. COCA provides technical assistance with grant writing, fundraising,
board development, arts business management, marketing, and a variety
of other topics to hundreds of individual artists and arts organizations
every year. COCA staff speaks at community programs, teach guest classes
at local colleges, and serve as panelists and jurors for grant review
panels and competitions. COCA also sponsors workshops and Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville funds and manages the Art in the Jail program which provides weekly arts instruction to juveniles jailed as adults by both a professional visual artist and a creative writer. Gulf Alliance for Local Arts Five 8-week classes of innovative art programming—held in three Senior Centers, an Assisted Living and Rehabilitation Center, and a Center for Retarded Citizens—will be provided to elderly people and adults with disabilities. Teaching artists will travel from Franklin and Gulf County facilities to instruct in a rural, underserved area. Guided by artists, participants will view and discuss other works of art, create their own work, and display the finished products at a community exhibit. Classes will provide beginning instruction in a variety of mixed media to best match clients’ skills with interests. Media will include acrylic painting, clay sculpting, and found art assembly. Participants will learn how to use visual arts to tap into self- expression and have engaged social interaction with instructors, peers and volunteers. A hands-on learning approach will be used, going beyond the passive arts and crafts activities typically offered at the facilities where classes will be held. A six-week creative dramatics class, meeting once weekly with the Gulf County Association of Retarded Citizens, will showcase a variety of styles, including storytelling, improvisation, movement, voice work, the use of texts and scripts, masks and puppets, and theater games. Through creative, dramatic structures, this will encourage participants to examine and explore both the world around them, and their own personal issues and interests. This new initiative is made possible through monies provided by an NEA Challenge Grant, the Florida Department of Cultural Affairs, and the Gulf Alliance for Local Arts. Pasco Arts Council Historically, the Pasco Arts Council has provided programming for at-risk youth in collaboration with the Pasco County Juvenile justice system.
